Tomato Zlatava Seeds

Grow your own delicious and vibrant yellow-orange tomatoes with these high-quality Zlatava seeds. Known for their excellent flavor and good yields.

Growing Instructions

Sowing Time:

    • Indoor Sowing (Recommended): Sow indoors from late February to April, approximately 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost in your region. Given the current time in late April in Southport, you're right at the tail end of the ideal indoor sowing window for a summer harvest.
  • Sowing Method:

    • Sow seeds thinly, about 0.5cm (¼ inch) deep, in good quality seed compost. You can use seed trays or small pots.
    • Keep the compost moist but not waterlogged.
    • Place the trays or pots in a warm location, ideally with a temperature of 18-21°C (65-70°F), to encourage germination. A propagator or a warm windowsill works well.
    • Once seedlings have their first true leaves, prick them out carefully and transplant them into individual 7.5cm (3-inch) pots.
  • Germination: Tomato seeds typically germinate within 7-14 days under the right conditions.

  • Growing On:

    • Continue to grow the seedlings in a warm, bright location (but out of direct scorching sun).
    • Water them regularly, allowing the top of the compost to dry out slightly between waterings.
    • Once the plants have filled their pots with roots, pot them on into larger containers (around 1 litre or 4-inch pots).
  • Hardening Off: Before transplanting outdoors, gradually acclimatize the young tomato plants to outdoor conditions over 7-10 days. Place them in a sheltered spot during the day and bring them back indoors at night, gradually increasing the time they spend outside.

  • Planting Out:

    • Transplant outdoors after the last risk of frost, which is typically late May or early June in many UK regions.
    • Choose a sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained soil.
    • Enrich the soil with plenty of well-rotted organic matter (like compost or manure) before planting.
    • Space plants about 60cm (2 feet) apart.
    • 'Zlatava' can be grown as a cordon (indeterminate) or a bush (determinate) variety, though it's often treated as a cordon for better yields and easier harvesting of its typically medium-sized fruits. If growing as a cordon, provide support.
  • Support (if cordon): If you are growing 'Zlatava' as a cordon, use stakes, canes, or a tomato cage to tie the main stem as it grows.

Care Instructions

Watering: Water regularly and deeply, especially during dry periods and when the fruits are developing. Aim to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water at the base of the plant to avoid wetting the foliage, which can encourage diseases.

  • Feeding: Once the first truss (cluster of flowers) has set fruit, start feeding regularly with a balanced liquid tomato fertilizer. Follow the manufacturer's instructions. Continue feeding every 1-2 weeks throughout the growing season.
  • Pinching Out Side-shoots (if cordon): If growing as a cordon, 'Zlatava' will produce side-shoots (small stems that grow between the main stem and a leaf branch). These should be pinched out regularly to encourage the plant to put its energy into producing fruit on the main stem. Bush varieties generally don't require pinching out.
  • Pollination: Tomatoes are generally self-pollinating, but gently shaking the flower trusses occasionally, especially in a greenhouse, can help to release pollen and improve fruit set.
  • Leaf Pruning: Once the lower fruits start to ripen, you can remove some of the yellowing or crowded lower leaves to improve air circulation and allow more sunlight to reach the developing fruits. Don't remove too many leaves at once.
  • Harvesting: Tomato 'Zlatava' is an early variety and is typically ready for harvest from July onwards, depending on when they were sown and the weather conditions. The fruits will be a lovely golden-yellow colour and slightly soft to the touch. Harvest regularly as they ripen to encourage more fruit production.
  • Pest and Diseases: Keep an eye out for common tomato pests and diseases such as aphids, whitefly, tomato blight, and blossom end rot. Take appropriate action if any issues arise. Good ventilation, proper watering, and avoiding overcrowding can help prevent many problems.

Enjoy the sweet and sunny flavour of your homegrown 'Zlatava' tomatoes!
