Parsnips Albion F1 Seeds

Grow long, smooth, and high-yielding parsnips with these Albion F1 hybrid seeds. Known for their excellent flavor and disease resistance.

Growing Instructions

Sowing Time: Parsnips need a long growing season and are best sown directly outdoors from mid-spring to early summer (typically March to May). The soil needs to have warmed up a bit for good germination.

  • Sowing Method:

    • Choose a sunny spot with deep, well-drained soil that is free from stones and freshly added manure (which can cause forking). Parsnips prefer a fine, loose soil.
    • Rake the soil to a fine tilth.
    • Create drills about 1.5-2cm (½-¾ inch) deep and 30cm (12 inches) apart.
    • Parsnip seeds can be a bit erratic with germination. Sow 2-3 seeds together every 10-15cm (4-6 inches) along the drill.
    • Gently cover the seeds with fine soil and water lightly with a fine-rose watering can.
  • Germination: Parsnip seeds can be slow and sometimes frustrating to germinate, often taking 14-28 days, and sometimes longer depending on soil temperature and moisture. Keep the soil consistently moist during this period. Covering the rows with horticultural fleece can help retain moisture and slightly raise the soil temperature.

  • Thinning: Once the seedlings have emerged and have a couple of true leaves, thin them out to the strongest seedling every 10-15cm (4-6 inches).

Care Instructions

Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry periods, to keep the soil consistently moist. Consistent moisture is important for good root development and to prevent splitting.

  • Weeding: Keep the parsnip bed free of weeds, which can compete for water, nutrients, and light. Hand-weed carefully to avoid damaging the developing roots.

  • Feeding: Parsnips generally don't need a lot of fertilizer, especially if the soil was well-prepared with organic matter the previous autumn. Avoid nitrogen-rich fertilizers, as they can encourage leafy growth and forking. If your soil is very poor, a light application of a balanced, low-nitrogen fertilizer a few weeks after thinning can be considered.

  • Pest and Diseases: Parsnips are generally relatively pest and disease-free. However, keep an eye out for carrot root fly (which can also affect parsnips), slugs, and canker. 'Albion F1' has good resistance to canker, which is a significant advantage.

    • Carrot Root Fly: Use fine insect netting (fleece or horticultural mesh) draped over hoops to prevent the fly from laying eggs. Good crop rotation is also helpful.
    • Slugs: Protect young seedlings using appropriate organic methods.
    • Canker: This fungal disease can cause brown, sunken lesions on the crown and upper part of the root. Good drainage and avoiding damage to the roots can help prevent it. 'Albion F1' offers good resistance.
  • Earthing Up (Optional): Some gardeners gently earth up the shoulders of the parsnips as they grow to prevent them from turning green in the sunlight.

  • Harvesting: Parsnips 'Albion F1' are typically ready for harvest from autumn onwards, about 16-20 weeks after sowing. The flavour of parsnips is actually improved by a touch of frost, as it converts some of the starches to sugars, making them sweeter. Harvest them as needed throughout the winter. Use a fork to carefully lift the roots, being careful not to break them.

Enjoy your smooth, canker-resistant, and delicious Parsnips 'Albion F1'! Their sweet flavour, especially after a frost, is a real treat.
