Growing Instructions

Sowing Time: Spring onions are quick growers, allowing for multiple sowing's throughout the growing season for a continuous harvest.

    • Under Protection (Greenhouse/Polytunnel): Sow from late winter to early spring.
    • Direct Sowing Outdoors: Sow from early spring to late summer. Make successional sowings every 4-6 weeks.
  • Sowing Method:

    • Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Spring onions appreciate fertile soil, so incorporating some well-rotted organic matter (like compost) before sowing is beneficial.
    • Rake the soil to a fine tilth.
    • Create shallow drills about 1cm (½ inch) deep and 15cm (6 inches) apart.
    • Sow the small seeds thinly along the drills. You can sow them a little more densely than larger seeds.
    • Gently cover the seeds with fine soil and water lightly with a fine-rose watering can.
  • Germination: Spring onion seeds typically germinate within 7-14 days, depending on soil temperature and moisture. Keep the soil consistently moist during this period.

  • Thinning: Once the seedlings are a few centimetres tall, thin them out to about 2-3cm (1 inch) apart to give them space to develop. The thinnings are also edible!

Care Instructions

Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry periods, to keep the soil consistently moist. Spring onions have shallow roots and can dry out quickly.

  • Weeding: Keep the area around the spring onions free of weeds, which can compete for water and nutrients. Hand-weed carefully to avoid disturbing the shallow roots.
  • Feeding: Spring onions are not heavy feeders, but a light application of a balanced liquid fertilizer a few weeks after germination can provide a boost to their growth.
  • Pest and Diseases: Spring onions are generally quite resilient, but keep an eye out for onion fly and downy mildew.
    • Onion Fly: This pest can lay eggs at the base of the plants, and the larvae can damage the roots. Using insect netting can provide a barrier. Good crop rotation can also help reduce the risk.
    • Downy Mildew: This fungal disease can appear in humid conditions. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering.
  • Harvesting: Spring onions 'Lilly' are typically ready for harvest relatively quickly, usually within 8-10 weeks from sowing, depending on the size you prefer. Simply pull them gently from the soil when they reach the desired size. You can harvest them at any stage, from small, young seedlings to slightly larger ones. Regular harvesting can also encourage continued production.

Enjoy your easily grown and versatile Spring Onion 'Lilly'! They're a great addition to salads, stir-fries, and as a fresh garnish.
