Spring Onion Eiffel Seeds

Grow tall, slender spring onions with these high-quality Eiffel seeds. Known for their mild flavor and upright growth.

Growing Instructions

Sowing Time: Spring onions are relatively quick to mature, allowing for multiple sowings throughout the growing season for a continuous supply.

    • Under Protection (Greenhouse/Polytunnel): Sow from late winter to early spring (typically February to March).
    • Direct Sowing Outdoors: Sow from early spring to late summer (typically March to August). Make successional sowings every 4-6 weeks.
  • Sowing Method:

    • Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Spring onions prefer fertile soil, so incorporating some well-rotted organic matter (like compost) before sowing is beneficial.
    • Rake the soil to a fine tilth.
    • Create shallow drills about 1cm (½ inch) deep and 15cm (6 inches) apart.
    • Sow the small, black seeds thinly along the drills. You can sow them a little more densely than larger seeds.
    • Gently cover the seeds with fine soil and water lightly with a fine-rose watering can.
  • Germination: Spring onion seeds typically germinate within 7-14 days, depending on soil temperature and moisture. Keep the soil consistently moist during this period.

  • Thinning: Once the seedlings are a few centimetres tall, thin them out to about 2-3cm (1 inch) apart to allow them space to develop. You can eat the thinnings!

Care Instructions

Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry periods, to keep the soil consistently moist. Spring onions have shallow roots and can dry out quickly.

  • Weeding: Keep the area around the spring onions free of weeds, which can compete for water and nutrients. Hand-weed carefully to avoid disturbing the shallow roots.
  • Feeding: Spring onions generally don't require heavy feeding. However, a light application of a balanced liquid fertilizer a few weeks after germination can give them a boost.
  • Pest and Diseases: Spring onions are generally relatively pest and disease-free. However, keep an eye out for onion fly and downy mildew.
    • Onion Fly: This pest can lay eggs at the base of the plants, and the larvae can damage the roots. Using insect netting can help prevent access. Good crop rotation can also reduce the risk.
    • Downy Mildew: This fungal disease can occur in humid conditions. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering.
  • Harvesting: Spring onions 'Eiffel' are typically ready for harvest relatively quickly, usually within 8-12 weeks from sowing, depending on the size you prefer. Simply pull them gently from the soil when they reach the desired size. You can harvest them at any stage, from small seedlings to larger bulbs with longer green tops. Regular harvesting will also encourage further growth.

Enjoy your fresh and flavourful Spring Onion 'Eiffel'! Their ease of growth and quick turnaround make them a rewarding addition to any garden.
