🌿 Growing & Care Guide

Mizuna is a fast-growing, mild mustard green with delicate, feathery leaves and a gentle peppery bite. Easy to grow in any space — even in cool weather — it’s perfect for salads, stir-fries, and sustainable small-space gardening at home, in schools, or in community beds.

🌿 Quick Facts

  • Botanical Name: Brassica rapa var. nipposinica

  • Type: Fast-growing annual salad green

  • Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade

  • Height: 8–16 inches (20–40 cm)

  • Spacing: 6–8 inches apart

  • Germination Time: 5–10 days

  • Harvest Time: 21–40 days from sowing

🌞 How to Grow

  1. Direct Sow or Start Indoors: Sow in spring or late summer for best results.

  2. Sow ¼ inch deep in moist, fertile soil or seed trays.

  3. Cool & Quick: Prefers cooler temperatures — great for spring and autumn crops.

  4. Succession Sow: Every 2–3 weeks for continuous harvests.

💧 Care Tips

  • Watering: Keep soil evenly moist to prevent bolting (early flowering).

  • Feeding: Add compost at planting — mizuna rarely needs extra feeding.

  • Thinning: Thin to 6–8 inches apart for full heads or harvest as baby leaves.

  • Container Friendly: Excellent in pots and shallow trays on balconies or windowsills.

🌼 Growing Sustainably

  • Quick Yield: One of the fastest leafy greens — ideal for low-input food production.

  • Pollinator Friendly: If left to flower, yellow blooms attract bees and hoverflies.

  • Zero Waste: Entire plant is edible — from baby leaves to mature stems.

✂️ Harvesting

  • Baby Leaves: Begin cutting in 3 weeks for salads.

  • Full Plants: Harvest entire heads after 35–40 days.

  • Use the cut-and-come-again method to encourage regrowth.

Tip: Harvest in the morning for crispest leaves and best flavour.

❄️ Overwintering

  • In mild UK climates, mizuna may survive under cover or fleece.

  • Sow late-season crops under a cold frame for winter greens.
