Calendula Winter Sun Pictorial Seeds

Grow beautiful, bright yellow Calendula (pot marigold) flowers with these Winter Sun seeds. Known for their sunny blooms and long flowering period.

Growing Instructions

Sowing Time:

    • Direct Sow: Sow directly outdoors from April to May for summer and autumn flowering. You can also sow in July to August for flowering throughout autumn and winter.
    • Indoor Sowing: Start seeds indoors in moist seed compost at a temperature of 18-23°C. Transplant seedlings into 8cm pots once large enough to handle and grow in cooler conditions until ready to plant outdoors.
    • Autumn Sowing: In milder climates (Zone 8 and above), you can sow seeds in late summer to early autumn for winter blooms, either directly in place or in seed trays. Overwinter in a conservatory or greenhouse if started indoors.
  • Sowing Method:
    • Direct Sow: Sow thinly, 10mm (½ inch) deep, in drills spaced 30cm (12 inches) apart into well-prepared soil that has been raked to a fine tilth. Calendula seeds germinate in the dark.
    • Indoor Sowing: Sow seeds about ¼ inch deep in seed starting mix. Plant 2-3 seeds per pot. Thin to the strongest seedling.
    • Spacing: When seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out to 30cm (12 inches) apart. For indoor sown seedlings, transplant them with 8-12 inches spacing.
  • Germination: Seeds typically germinate in 5-14 days.
  • Soil: Calendula is not particularly fussy about soil but thrives in well-draining soil. Enriching the soil with compost or well-rotted manure before planting is beneficial.
  • Sunlight: Calendula 'Winter Sun' prefers full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily) but can tolerate partial shade. More sun generally leads to more vigorous growth and flowering.
  • Watering: Water regularly until the plants are well-established. Afterward, water consistently, keeping the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply and less frequently, allowing the top inch or two of soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal diseases.
  • Hardening Off (for indoor sown seedlings): Gradually acclimate indoor-grown seedlings to outdoor conditions for about two weeks before transplanting.

Care Instructions

Watering: Maintain consistent moisture, especially during dry spells. Water at the base of the plants in the morning. Reduce watering in winter.

  • Feeding: Calendula generally doesn't require heavy feeding. A light feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer early in the growing season can be beneficial. Once established, feeding monthly with a bloom-boosting fertilizer (higher in phosphorus) can encourage more flowers.
  • Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flowers to encourage more blooms and prolong the flowering period.
  • Winter Care: In colder regions, Calendula 'Winter Sun' is grown as an annual and will die off after hard frosts. In milder climates (Zones 8 and above), it may bloom through the winter. Protect plants from early hard frosts with a frost blanket. Mulching (3-4 inches) can also help insulate the soil. Potted plants can be brought indoors to a bright, cool location (around 21-24°C or 70-75°F).
  • Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch around the plants to help retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and provide some protection during cold snaps.
  • Pest and Diseases: Calendula is generally relatively pest and disease-free. However, keep an eye out for aphids and powdery mildew. Good air circulation and avoiding overwatering can help prevent issues.
  • Self-Seeding: Calendula readily self-seeds. If you want them to return the following year, allow some flowers to mature and go to seed.

By following these instructions, you should enjoy a lovely display of bright yellow Calendula 'Winter Sun' flowers in your garden, even during the cooler months.
